Why is it important for a solar company to follow a National Code of Ethics and Standards of Conduct? Professional standards are the norm in respected professions like medical, law, accounting, architecture, etc. Not only do these professions require education, certification and continuing education, they require the following of a Code of Ethics.
NABCEP (North American Board of Certified Energy Practitioners) is the “gold standard” organization for solar professionals. While it is not a requirement to be “NABCEP Certified” to install solar in Louisiana, Gulf South Solar became the first company in Louisiana to have a NABCEP certified installer. Since then, approximately 10 other companies in Louisiana have followed our lead in the last 5 years. They also offer training for “entry level” solar people called the “Certificate of Knowledge” program. Currently, this is all that is required in Louisiana is to attend one of these classes. They are a great way to get your “training wheels” so you can possibly get work as an apprentice in the solar business.
NAECEP requires its certificants to sign a Code of Ethics to maintain high standards in our industry. It is possible however for a company to hire a NABCEP Certified installer and not be aware of the Code of Ethics that the installer has agreed to. Hopefully that installer would either make the company adhere to the Code of Ethics or leave that company ASAP.
If the company’s owner is NABCEP Certified it is a better indication that their company will be on board with the NABCEP Code of Ethics. Don’t settle for less with the company you choose.
